Sučany Alumni Chairmanship

Štefan Korbeľ, Chairman (2012–)

Legend has it that I have been a GBAS* spirit ever since I first saw the school’s tower on my way from Martin to the first admission exams preparation session sometime in spring 2004. Thanks to a scholarship offered by the Open Society Foundation (OSF) in collaboration with The Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC), I left for Shrewsbury School, an all-boys school in England, after two beautiful years at Sučany’s grammar school. I returned to Sučany for my fifth year in September 2008 after getting my A-levels in England, because I am truly very fond of our school and the people who run up and down its stairs. Despite the fondness that I hold for Sučany, I decided not to fail the fifth year and to continue my education at the Aberystwyth University where I study International Politics with French. Thanks to the Erasmus exchange program, I spent the last year at l’Institut d’études politiques de Strasbourg in France, where I gained le Diplôme interdisciplinaire d’études européennes.

Besides studying, I like to play football or a game of chess. My hobbies include politics, international relations, history, philosophy, and literature. I like meeting with my friends and listening to their stories while drinking a cup of green tea or flat white, a glass of good red wine, or a well-chilled lager.

*GBAS: short for Gymnázium bilingválne anglicko-slovenské (Bilingual English-Slovak Grammar School)

Tomáš Jacko, FOUNDER, 1st Chairman (2009–12), Vice-Chairman (2012–)

Tomáš enrolled into the grammar school in Sučany in September 2001. After two years he won the Secondary School Scholarship of the Open Society Foundation, which enabled him to study in England. Tomáš graduated from these studies in the year 2005 and enrolled into the University of Manchester. In 2006, he passed the Slovak school leaving examination (maturita) in Sučany. He gained a bachelor degree in political science and international relations and a masters degree in public administration at the same university. He works for Transparency International Slovakia on various anti-corruption projects. In 2010 he enrolled into the postgraduate studies of political theory at FSEV UK (Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences, Comenius University in Bratislava). Tomáš´s hobbies are family, keeping up with news, art and architecture. Between the years 1995 and 2000 Tomáš´s brother Róbert also studied in Sučany.
Tomáš came up with the idea of establishing the Sučany Alumni civil association thanks to his experience with establishing student associations and with representing students. Besides uniting graduates, Tomáš wants the grammar school in Sučany and its students and staff members to preserve their extraordinary quality and to thrive also after the end of their affiliation with the grammar school.

Michal started studying in Sučany in autumn 2002, became the vice-chairman of the Student Council that very academic year, and became the chairman the following academic year of 2003/2004. Under his leadership, the Student Council was radically reformed, started a close cooperation with the school’s management and the Society of Parents and Friends of the School (SPFS), and became an integral part of the school’s affairs. Michal also represented the school at debate tournaments – in 2005 he was declared the best speaker at the Slovak national debate finals. He continued his studies at the Masaryk University in Brno, where, in 2012, he got his degree in a rare and, in Central Europe, unique study program – Security and Strategic Studies. He also plans to get his doctorate in the same study program. He has been working at various positions in Student Agency since 2008. His hobbies include classical music, nuclear strategic concepts, theories of international relations and security studies, and nuclear proliferation implications for international relations, as well as railways and aviation. smile

I am a year four student at GBAS and try to meet the needs and accept the ideas of a large number of people at the school. I worked towards fulfilling this goal as the president of ProFor U – a student company – in the academic year 2011/2012, and will continue in this endeavour as a vice-chairman of the Sučany Alumni, and as the students’ representative in the School Council. As a member of the Alumni’s management, I will try to organize useful and fulfilling meetings between current and former students, which could help young people to be better acquainted with the world and with their future universities.

Your EDU co-founder.
